Soil on a slope is held in place by friction. When water saturates that soil, it acts as a lubricant, reducing friction and allowing gravity to pull the hillside down—taking your retaining walls and foundation with it. This is why proper drainage is not optional for hillside properties.
Protecting Retaining Walls
Every retaining wall should have a gravel drainage layer and a perforated pipe behind it to relieve hydrostatic pressure. If your retaining wall shows white mineral stains (efflorescence) or is starting to lean, it likely lacks proper drainage. Addressing this early is far cheaper than rebuilding the wall.
